So today while I was at the pool with the kids, I started thinking about how long it's been since I've posted an update to the blog and decided that updating today was a must. I have missed several Top-Ten Tuesday posts, and other general musings while on this unintentional hiatus from the blogging world....this should not come as a surprise to those of you who might read this although I did do a better job of keeping things update this past spring than in years past.
Where to start is always somewhat tricky when I've taken a break although I have to say it's been a relatively quiet summer for us. The twins will be starting Kindergarten in about 2 1/2 weeks...I am not sure I'm ready for that, but have come to accept the inevitable in that they are going to grow up and no matter how hard I try sometimes, I have been unsuccessful at stopping time. If anyone figures that out, please share...(although I wouldn't want to stop it all the time....just at certain times. Sometimes I'd actually like to fast forward things...like when I have to go to the dentist or when I am stuck in traffic....that sort of thing.)
Both of my children have grown-up so much....they can both swim now unassisted, which makes pool time that much more enjoyable for me, they can ride their bikes without training wheels, and are becoming really good at their Math facts and sight words in preparation for school.
Brody lost another tooth last weekend, which makes his total count up to 2 teeth lost while Caroline is just starting to have a loose tooth. I suspect by Christmas time, Brody will be singing the song "All I Want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth" and Caroline will have lost one or be about ready to lose one. Just my predictions, but I'll keep you posted.
We recently added two new members to our family in the way of fish......Gilly-Gulpa (fish have gills and this particular fish looked like he was always gulping so this was the name Caroline chose) and Tiger (a very small striped fish named aptly so by Brody because he looks like a tiger). Sadly, Gilly-Gulpa (Caroline's fish) did not live very long and passed away this evening. It was somewhat tragic for my 5-year old daughter, as this was her first experience at losing a pet....though after a few minutes of mourning her loss she promptly replied to me "Mommy, Gulpa is in fish heaven but he'll always live in my heart so I won't be sad anymore.....can we buy me another fish tomorrow?" There really are no words sometimes for the things they say and their reasoning....I guess I'll be fish shopping tomorrow...hopefully this one will live a little longer.
The rest of the summer we've spent time poolside, at the beach, bowling, the zoo, Mayfield dairy farm, various splash pads around town, and some good old-fashioned playing in the yard and in the house with our toys and imaginations. I have to say, I am blessed to have two children that for the most part play so well together and are able to entertain themselves.
As summer draws to a close for me, I have to say it has been nice to rejuvenate and spend time with the kids....daily I am reminded that this time is short and will pass before I know it...one day I'll be wishing that they were around to ask me to play with them, read them a story, kiss their boo-boos, or simply just hold them as they still sometimes ask me to do. Of course, they have both assured me that they will always be here with me even when they're big....we'll see how that works out, but for now I'll take it!

Top-Ten Tuesday...several days late and a top 20 to make up for it
So I've missed Top-Ten Tuesday now for two weeks in a row...guess that's what happens when school is out for the summer and everyday is like a Saturday....it's hard to keep track of what day it is when not going to school/work every day. ;) So, I am just going to pretend that today is Tuesday, though I actually think it's Wednesday and may be starting on Thursday since it looks like I'll actually be posting this blog after midnight....at any rate, as my kids and I have spent a good bit of time at the pool and riding around in the car, they've become quite the little DJ's (though a lot of the songs they make me listen to over and over aren't actually on this list) and as a result, I decided to make a list of my top 20 summer/anytime feel good songs that make you want to roll the windows down, turn the radio way up, sing at the top of your lungs, and dance like no one is watching you. I know it's a rather random mix of songs, but that's just how I roll....I like a little bit of everything, and these always bring a smile to my face....as do a few hundred more. However, I will stop at 20 for now....
1. "Brown-Eyed Girl" Van Morrison
2. "Walking on Sunshine" Katrina and The Waves
3. " Knee Deep" Zac Brown Band
4. "Stay (Wasting Time)" Dave Matthews Band
5. "Brandy" Three Dog Night
6. "Bubbly Toes" Jack Johnson
7. "Centerfield" John Fogerty (This song is otherwise known as Brody's song)
8. "Sweet Caroline" Neil Diamond (This song is otherwise known as Caroline's song...for obvious reasons)
9. "Every Thing She Does is Magic" The Police
10. "Boogie Shoes" KC and The Sunshine Band
11. "Celebration" Kool and the Gang
12. "Wave on Wave" Pat Green
13. "Beast of Burden" Rolling Stones
14. "Don't Stop Believing" Journey
15. "Your Love" The Outfield
16. " Pride and Joy" Stevie Ray Vaughn
17. "Shook me All Night Long" ACDC
18. "Jack and Diane" John Mellencamp
19. "American Girl" Tom Petty
20. "Jesse's Girl" Rick Springfield
I think I should make this a playlist....who knows, maybe someone else reading this will too. It'd be a good one!

Top Ten Tuesday...a day late: ten pieces of advice for graduating seniors
"It's here...it's here" my children cried out this morning, (and by children I mean both my own 2 kids and all of my children at school because let's face it, they are my kids too)... "yes, it is here" I casually replied trying ever so desperately to contain my excitement over the fact that yes, it is finally here....the last day of the school year!!!!! I thought to myself this morning....I have made it another year in this profession...all without getting too many new gray hairs, only gaining 1 extra wrinkle or two, and maintaining most of my mental faculties....not too bad, I must say. As I pondered this thought about the end of another school year, I realized that I have been out of high school for 20 years....20 years......I can't believe just how quickly those 20 years have gone by. It seems like just yesterday, I was graduating high school with all of the hopes and dreams every 17 year-old has....(I was going to be rich and famous with a fabulous life, right??)
I actually can't complain about life too much especially compared to what many people have to go through or have gone through....sure, there have been some difficult times, bumps along the way if you will, but who doesn't go through that? I am very blessed with all that I have, and have to say that many of the bumps along the way or tough times I have fallen upon have actually been a result of my own doing. Some have just been part of life, but a lot have been my fault....hard to admit that, but it's true. To that end, my top ten list is pieces of advice I would give to those who are graduating this week....just some things to consider as this new journey of "life after high school" begins....this is not intended to be professional advice, just some things I have learned along the way the past 20 years that I thought are worth sharing...
1. Learn effective communication and listening skills....even if you have to take a class for it. Being able to communicate, as well as listen are essential keys and tools for success.
2. Don't burn any bridges you may one day have to cross back over....and trust me, you will have to cross back over a bridge at least once in your lifetime.
3. Take care of your reputation by carefully considering the choices you make, and don't be afraid to stick up for what you believe in even if it is not the popular choice. You may not be liked by following this piece of advice, but you will be respected.
4. Don't buy something you don't have money in the bank to pay for. There is nothing in this world you "need" that badly. Credit is a good thing to have, but it is not something you should live off of...it's very difficult to repair bad credit once you've messed it up. (and creditors love to prey upon young college students- trust me I was once one of those)
5. Be kind to others. Not always an easy thing to do, as people will make you mad and are in general not kind. However, you will get much farther in life in the end if you are kind....(just don't mistake being kind for being a doormat. There's a difference and people will take advantage of you if you let them.)
6. Listen to your parents, professors, teachers, and in general those that are older than you. You will still likely do what you want to do anyway, as that is part of life and part of learning and growing, however those people in your life are only trying to help you safely navigate through life because they care about you. Many times they are trying to prevent you from making the same mistakes that they made.....there is wisdom with age, so listen to them even if you don't agree and/or don't want to...someday you will be one of them and you will understand.
7. Make it a point to tell those you love and care about that you love and care about them. You never know when you will see them last, and it's an awful feeling to want to tell someone and realize you can't because they're no longer here.
8. Remember when faced with tough times that someone always has it worse than you. There is something positive that can be taken away from every situation....so look for that silver lining.
9. Mistakes are going to happen...you will make them and it's okay. What makes the difference is how you handle things when you do mess up and what you learn/take away from those situations.
10. Enjoy life and all it brings....you are given one life to live, so handle it with care and make the most of it!

Top Ten Tuesday- Some of my favorite things
So my top ten list for today centers around some of my favorite things. Over this past weekend, I got to experience some of my favorite things, and got to thinking about it so thought I'd use it as a topic for today's top ten list....everyone can identify and list their favorite things...you know those things and moments in life that when you experience or think about them bring you to your "happy place", warm your heart, and make you smile. This is by no means a complete list of my favorite things nor are these necessarily in any particular order....I really enjoy a lot of things, but these are the first ten that came to my mind today when thinking of this topic.
1. My children's laughter...they have the best laughs...you know the kind that come from your belly....it's sheer delight-while individual and unique, both bring a smile to my face and brighten my day instantly. If I could bottle up their laughs and sell them, I would be a millionaire...
2. The smell of fresh cut grass... in particular on a summer evening or spring morning when wild onions have been cut along with the grass....and also the smell of freshly sharpened pencils. (I know that last one's a little strange...but it is what it is)
3. Sweet Tea- this to me is the nectar of the gods and hands down is my favorite drink....it has to be freshly brewed, sweet tea and not the northern substitution of "flavored tea" or the tea you get in a can or otherwise prepared- yes, I am a tea snob and have to say my favorite is Chick-fil-A sweet tea....its the closest thing to "gigi" tea (this is the sweet tea my grandmother used to make me when I was a little girl....it was really "a little tea with your sugar" kind of sweet tea, but it was the best...what I would give to have a tall glass of "gig" tea today....thankfully she taught me the secret before she passed away though when I make it's still not quite the same)
4. I love office supplies and office supply stores....pens, markers, paper, organizers, etc....I love them all. One of the perks of my job is that I get to use office supplies every day....am pretty sure that classifies me a somewhat of a geek, but that's okay.
5. Music- I LOVE music....really all kinds, except for the whole 90's grunge thing....I just can't get into that or super weird alternative or otherwise eclectic, artsy fartsy music....other than that, I love it all...A song with its tune and/or lyrics can always express things I feel but am unable to communicate.... Music gets me right to my core...and I don't know what I would do without it. My preference is usually directly linked to my mood at the time but there are several songs that are just staples in my musical preference. You know like the favorite pair of shoes that go with anything or your favorite pair of jeans that you can wear anytime....For some people their comfort solace is in food....for me its music.
6. Sports- I love sports....playing, watching, really anything involving sports...To me there is just nothing better than a baseball game on a summer night or spring afternoon or a football game in the Fall....whether it's a high school ball game, college game, or a professional one each has its own appeal....I love the whole experience from the hamburgers and hot dogs to the cheers and jeers of the crowd, all while watching with anticipation to see if my team is going to win....(though to be honest, I'd go and watch even if it wasn't my favorite team)....I spent a good bit of time on the ball field growing up with my dad who played when I was young, and then as I got older these were things we did together to spend time with each other...often times not a word was spoken, but the memories made and time spent is priceless....I've been to some great games in my lifetime....
7. Trivia and little know facts about random things...I am fascinated by these things....useless information although sometimes you never know when it can come in handy or when you'll need to use it for something
8. I love food.....especially good food...I think it ties in with the sensory part of who I am....and while I love to cook and enjoy home-cooked meals, I thoroughly enjoy the dining out experience.....especially when the company is good.
9. NYC-- It's my favorite city to visit....I love the hustle and bustle, the lights, the noise....it's just like the movies and there's so much to do, see, and experience there....every time I go it's something different.
10. I love life and its adventures with all the craziness, happiness, sadness, etc....it brings and am so blessed to have a good one.
Have a happy Tuesday!! :)

Unexpected appreciation
This week is teacher appreciation week, and being that I am a teacher it's been a week filled with a few little extra special treats at school. I have to say, I have enjoyed the thoughtful gestures, lunch, breakfast, and other things I have received from our PTSA, administration, and of course the students....everyone likes to feel appreciated, and they have done a great job with that here at the school where I work.
Regardless of it's often flawed philosophies, ever-changing strategies, and a host of other things beyond my control that make this job challenging at times, I am so blessed and privileged to be in this profession and would not trade it for anything in the world.
Aside from the planned celebrations, perhaps the most special thing was an unexpected note I received today from one of my students. You see it's the student that no one really wants to work with, often times comes into class with a slight, what I affectionately call a "teenage" attitude, and will occasionally choose not do do anything. I have to admit this student has tried my patience a time or two, but after months of working with this student some good days and bad days, we have finally reached a mutual understanding of each other's expectations and I have been quite pleased with the progress. (I have to say, I have high expectations for my students regardless of their circumstances although knowing it make take some longer than others to meet my expectations- eventually they all get there in the end.....students/kids in general will rise to meet you if you will set the bar for them) At any rate, this particular student wrote me a note....it was a simple note, but one that warmed my heart and admittedly brought a tear to my eye. ( I had to correct some of the spelling errors and a few other things, but tried to leave it as close to its original form as possible)
The note said:
"Dear Mrs. Jenkins,
Thank you for everything you do for me and for being so kind....and oh yeah, always smiling. It makes me happy to come to your class, and I'm thankful for all your hard-work and patience you put into teaching me/us. Mostly that you believe in me and think I can be something when I get out of here. You make me want to work harder and do better in school because I don't want to let you down. You are the best. I will miss you if I don't have you next year, but can I come by and visit you in your classroom and you will still help me, right? "
I could hardly believe it, and have to say this is a highlight in my 14-year career as an educator. Never would I have expected this from this student. If you could see this student and know this student you would really understand how remarkable this note is. For all the difficulties, challenges, and otherwise unpleasant things my profession can sometimes bring, times like these make it all worthwhile and I would do it all over again in a heart-beat without question. (It's kind of like giving birth/having kids....all the stuff you go through for 9-months of carrying them, the physical pain of having them, and then all the stuff that follows after they're born is completely worth it when they learn to talk and tell you, "mommy, I love you....or thank you mommy for taking care of me, etc...." There is nothing like it and that makes it all worthwhile.)
Happy teacher appreciation week to all! May this serve as a reminder that all is not lost and often times the most difficult, hard to handle kids are the ones who need us the most. This has definitely brightened my day....along with the beautiful, warm SUNSHINE!!!! Hopefully it will do the same for you.....

Top Ten Tuesday: Some famous movie quotes.....
Today in my American Lit class, we were discussing the upcoming movie release of The Great Gatsby (we are reading this novel in class currently, and the movie comes out Friday). While discussing the happenings of the novel up to the current chapter in addition to whether or not we thought the movie would be the same, the topic of great movies and movie quotes came up. Now, I love movies- watching movies is one of my favorite things to do when I have time to do so....in fact, at times I view moments and parts my life as if they were scenes from a movie....perhaps a little odd or strange, I know, but it's what I do sometimes....especially with the good memories and thoughts...gives me the opportunity to rewind, pause, press play, and repeat them etc....which can definitely make a not so good day better.... At any rate, during lunch today, I started to think about this and came up with a sort of list of famous movie quotes....This is by no means and exhaustive list, as there are far more I could have included, but rather just a few that came to mind while on this topic.....so, I thought I'd share. Enjoy!! :)
1. "You can't handle the truth" (A Few Good Men)
2. "There's no crying in baseball" (A League of Their Own)- This one is said almost daily in my house especially whenever one of my 5-year olds cries for no apparent reason.
3. "Houston, we have a problem" (Apollo, 13)
4. "What we have here is a failure to communicate" (Cool Hand Luke) - I have to admit I have used this one a time or two both at home and at school.
5. "I'll have what she's having" (When Harry met Sally)- I have to say this is one of my favorites...love this movie and this particular scene from the movie...a classic
6. "Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?" (Rush Hour)- This one is used regularly....and I have to say that when I use this one or think of this one, for some reason I feel the need to say it the way in which the character said it which is really quite something to see....
7. "Don't act like you're not impressed" (Anchorman)- One of the funniest, stupid movies I have ever seen.....you have to appreciate this kind of humor in order to appreciate this quote....it's definitely not intellectual....funny nonetheless
8. "Life is like a box of chocolates..." (Forrest Gump)- One of the more profound movie quotes...
9. "You've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya...?" (Dirty Harry)
10. "Thank you sir, may I have another" (Animal House)- This one comes to mind, often with much sarcasm....especially after any rough day at work or whenever the day just seems to continue piling on things and I can't catch a break...it always makes me feel better and does the trick
Of course there are so many more I could add to this list, but this will do for now.

Funny Side of life.....Monday side up
So it's Monday, and I have just finished up a loooong day of EOCT testing at school. For those not up on school acronym's that stands for End of Course Testing. This is a contradicition in and of itself because we still have 2 1/2 weeks of school left and I am still teaching the course for which my students have just taken the end of course test. Crazy, right?? Ahhh, gotta love the school business....sometimes I really do wonder who in the world is making up the rules and when was the last time they were actually present in a real, live classroom/school? Curious as to whether or not there are others who share this view point....I will save my opinion on politics that I really can't change and focus on the fact that I am gainfully employed doing something I LOVE.....am pretty lucky in that regard because not too many people are able to say that about their jobs.
Back to Monday....Monday's are just....well, Monday's. I can't remember the last time I really got excited about Monday's except for when I have a Monday off, or have plans to do something fun, or see a friend I haven't seen in a while, and of course if it's payday...other than that, I am not a fan of Monday's.....but they do have a purpose, I suppose, though I am still searching for what that purpose is. If someone reading this knows the purpose of Monday's please let me know....
While browsing the internet over the weekend doing some research for my last few weeks of lessons at school, I came across several pictures, cartoons, etc....that depict the feeling Monday brings so I know I am not alone in my thinking....some were very humorous, some were kind of on the nasty side, and some were overly optimistic....I don't have anything incredibly enlightening to share with you today other than the fact that it's Monday....a chance to start a new week....a week closer to summer vacation....4 more days until Friday...gotta see the positive side to things, right?
At any rate, I thought I'd share some of my favorite Monday pics....maybe it'll brighten your day since the sun is still playing hide-n-seek....and hey, Monday's almost over and before you know it, it will be Friday again.....hope these make you chuckle or at least bring a half-smile to your face as they did mine....(no, it does not take much to entertain me....) Have a great Monday and week!!

Sunshine after the rain....
I know we needed the rain, but I for one am a little tired of all this cold, dreary rain we've been having. While good for my flowers, tomatoes, and corn that have been planted recently, I desperately long for the warmth of sunshine and the bright blue skies that so often accompany spring, or at least in my mind should accompany spring. Perhaps the weather hasn't realized that we are now in the month of MAY, and is stuck back in the old "April showers brings May flowers" time period...I say mother nature needs a gentle reminder that we are now in May and it's time for flowers, warmth, and sunshine. Grocery shopping, errand running, and all the other stuff that I normally do on weekend's is definitely no fun in this perpetual state of wetness, so I have decided that rainy days are better spent lounging on the couch watching movies or otherwise being unproductive. Of course there are plenty of things for me to do in the house, but somehow today watching cartoons and Disney movies with the kids was far more appealing than laundry or housework, so that's exactly what I did.(I am a little embarrassed to say that I might watch cartoons and Disney movies even if I didn't have kids...am sure there are those of you out there who would likely do the same), but I have to say I am a firm believer in the fact that at times it's okay to let the inner child out to play....when the situation, time, and location calls for it.
Such was the case this past Friday night when I took my son to play at the high school where I work. Yes, I combined work and play in the same sentence, and it is one of the perks of my job as a high school teacher....we had a senior carnival at school on Friday, and of course the inflatables etc...were rented for 24 hours, so we had a faculty night at the stadium with the kids. Since Caroline went to a sleepover with some of her little friends, I decided Brody and I would go and play because he LOVES bouncy things and playing in general. I also knew him seeing all those inflatables on the football field knowing that there was no time limit or cost and that he could jump and play his little heart out would make him the happiest little guy on the planet.....(I can honestly say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree there)....and boy did we have fun jumping and playing.....to watch him enjoying himself warmed my heart, brought a smile to my face, and will be a moment I'll cherish for years to come.
In preparation for the new week ahead of me, I took a little time to reflect a little on this past week where things were a little crazy at times (see my earlier post on flexibility). While doing so, I see the sun starting to peek through the clouds a bit and a break from all the rain...and as I am watching this, the thought occurs to me that even though there are long periods of rain that sometimes bring us down, require extra flexibility, and/or make things a little messy, there are equal moments of sunshine to balance everything out and bring us back around......this makes me smile and for that I am thankful.
Incidentally, I have posted some pictures below of Brody and me from Friday night.....such good times!

5 lessons I've learned this week on Flexibility
So this has been a week of flexibility lessons for me.....and no, not the kind that you would get at the gym or elsewhere for those who might be thinking crazy thoughts right now....no, rather the kind that teach us to "go with the flow". After a nice weekend, I should have known the week would throw me some curves to kind of keep the balance...you know that balance between things going great and things going not so great, so as to keep things grounded and even. Without going into too much boring detail, this week has included two trips to the doctors with my kids, a way too early in the morning conversation with my kids when I didn't have to wake up so early, 1 trip to the ER because Brody swallowed a penny, forgetting to put shoes on Caroline and realizing it only after I dropped her off at school, leaving my classroom keys and school work at home (the same morning I forgot to put shoes on Caroline....), a computer glitch with some standardized testing, (which for anyone who reads this that's in the school business knows how big a deal that can be), and a few other trivial things that really are no big deal in the grand scheme of things, but were still enough to knock me off balance a little so to speak. While reflecting today upon this past week and the events of the week, I took some time to list what I shall call "flexibility lessons" courtesy of the curves thrown to me this week....I thought I'd share in case anyone who might be reading this needs a little pep talk and reminder on the importance of being able to "go with the flow" and be flexible....who doesn't need these reminders on occasion, right?
1. Flexibility lesson one....take time to listen even if it's not really what you want to do.
2. Flexibility lesson two....you can't control everything, and sometimes you shouldn't try
3. Flexibility lesson three......always be prepared for the unexpected and adapt accordingly
4. Flexibility lesson four....always consider that your day might not go as planned and you may need to hit restart....but it will get better
5. Flexibility lesson five....if at first you don't succeed....keep on trying. Eventually, it will work out
I once heard somewhere that we grow as people when we are stretched and flexibility does go hand in hand with stretching- the more you are stretched, the more flexible you become...In life, there are many curves that come our way. The key to managing those curves is to recognize them when you see them coming and learn to be flexible with your approach based on the direction of the curve....kind of like I suspect a batter in baseball might approach a curve ball thrown at him. (It is that time of year, so I couldn't resist the baseball analogy-though not sure how accurate it is....it's just what I think)...just a little food for thought for those of you who might be struggling with some of those curves.

T-Minus 3 hours and counting
So, in approximately 3 hours or so we will be released from school and off for spring break. Needless to say, the natives are restless.....very restless, and I would have to also say the vast majority of the teachers are pretty ready for this break as well. To be honest though, it scares me a bit as to how quickly the time goes by. It seems like only yesterday that the school year began, and here we are 6 weeks from another graduation and the end of yet another school year. It's just crazy to me that we are already here at the end when it seems like we just began....but as I sit here and think, I draw the conclusion that life is really just a series of beginnings and endings....I am reminded of the song "Closing Time" by the band Semisonic...there's a line in the song that says "every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end" and boy does that really ring true. It got me thinking on beginnings and endings and how they really are interrelated. The end of the school year brings the beginning of summer...the end of summer brings the beginning of the school year etc....and so it goes. Sometimes I get so caught up in the cycle of beginning to end that I miss the stuff in between....for example, my kids can now read and write words, add and subtract, and they can even tell time on a regular, analog clock. It's quite impressive if I do say so myself. Somehow, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter etc...have all come and gone, and I feel as if I have somehow missed them all, yet I have the memories of those events....but was I really there or was I just going through the motions because they were just a series of events....beginnings and endings like the day to day tasks. I am really pondering this perspective, as I reflect upon this past year and have come to the conclusion that I am likely not alone. In this face-paced world we live in, it's easy to just get into a routine and go through the motions, but is that really living? Is that quality of life? I don't think so.....my resolve during this week off, is to somehow find a way to regain my focus and channel all of my energies into making sure I am in the present, living all moments good and bad to the best of my ability, and to make sure the people that I love and care about know how much I love and care about them. Life is short, and you never know how much time is left....for any of us. So I would encourage you all to make peace with your past, live in the present, and prepare for your future (just in case you make it there)....then sit back and enjoy the ride!

Ahh, the age of Realism
Again, a non-children post....but one I thought I'd share anyway....so in my American Lit class we are beginning a new unit on Realism..quite the opposite of Romanticism, which we just finished, and quite frankly somewhat of a downer...who needs a reminder of what's going on in the real world when one can lazily daydream and idealize the perfect world, right? I have come to the conclusion that I am somewhere in between the two....I always have grandiose ideas in my head, but then I also have the reality somewhere in the back of my mind. If I can ever figure out how to get the two to work together without causing too much trouble, I will be in business. At any rate, I came across some Mark Twain quotes that I thought were worth sharing and spending some time pondering.... lately I've been doing a lot of pondering and retreating....I think it's a coping mechanism.
"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt."
"Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society."
"The most interesting information comes from children, for they tell all they know and then stop."
"A man's character may be learned from the adjectives which he habitually uses in conversation."
Just some food for thought today....there were so many, I could have made a quite lengthly list. However, I will spare all of the non-quote readers the pain. If you'd like to read more of them, check out the website www.brainyquote.com which is where I came across these. Have a great Tuesday!

Monday, Monday
So it's Monday......yes Monday....probably my least favorite day of the week although I am forcing myself to learn to embrace Monday as a chance to start the week over and improve upon things from the previous week that maybe didn't go so well. Actually, this is something I try to do daily, as daily I mess up and have to constantly reflect and improve. However, that's a topic for another day- today, I wanted to keep it light-hearted and remind myself that laughter is the best medicine and cure-all for a multitude of things when the events and stresses of life perhaps have you a little bogged down. I came across the following list this morning while brousing the internet doing some research for one of my classes I teach. It made me smile, so I thought it worthwhile to share....it's nothing incredibly intellectual, (remember it is Monday) but maybe will brighten your day for a bit. Happy Monday!!

Update Part 2
I realize that my update yesterday was more about me and less about the kids, which really is what this blog is supposed to be all about. I think I shall create a separate blog to discuss my own perspectives on things so that this can remain focused on the kids.....of course it would likely take several blogs to cover my perspective on things, but I will keep it to just one. Stay tuned for that....I'll update the details of that blog once I get around to creating it.
As far as the kids are concerned, lots has been happening. Probably the most notable is the fact that one of the twins has lost their first tooth. Which twin you ask? None other than my first born and only son, Brody. This happened back in the middle of January....he was complaining of having tooth pain. Upon further investigation, we discovered that he in fact had a loose tooth. Now, those of you who know me, know that I don't handle those types of things well for many, many reasons. Mainly 1- because it's just gross and 2- it means that my baby boy is really no longer my baby boy, and serves as a reminder on how fast time really flies and how quickly life passes you by. To top off the loss of the first tooth, when we went to the dentist for a check-up, the dentist informed me that Brody had all of his 6-year molars. That's GREAT you might say.....well actually not really becuase HE'S ONLY 5!!!!! To make me feel better, the dentist told me he had the mouth of a 7 or 8 year old and would likely be shaving by age 10 or 11.....good grief, I don't know how I am going to handle that, and have to say that did not make me feel any better.
They are both learning so much and are doing so well in school. Both had high achievement scores on their testing, and are doing well with Spanish, Math, Reading, and Writing....I have to say, I am one proud mama and am going to have to work very hard not to be an obnoxious one.
Both have begun to read the easy readers, and now bedtime consists of me reading a story to them and then they read one to me. Although, last night as I was reading to Caroline, she had the suggestion of me reading the "hard words" and she could read all of the sight words...
We are in the home stretch of our experience in Pre-K, and are on the quest for where to send the twins to Kindergarten, which I guess will be decided once we figure out where we're going to land-SEE previous post.

Time for another update
So, 4 months ago I updated my blog with the latest and greatest happenings in the Jenkins' household and was thinking to myself today that I have not updated in a while. So....while I had some downtime- which does not occur often- I thought I would update. Not that there will be anyone to read, but for some reason it makes me feel better to write sometimes....
The last time I wrote, we had just had the flood of 2012.....since then, we managed, with much difficulty and challenge, to get the repairs completed and everything restored and back in working condition. It was not easy to have no use of the kitchen for over a month, no furniture downstairs, and everything in general disarray, but I kept thinking to myself someone always has it worse. On the positive side of things, not only were the floors repaired, but we were able to replace all of the carpet downstairs with beautiful, South American Elm hardwoods, and the upstairs bathrooms with brand new tile. We had all of our trim repainted, the ceilings replaced, and a host of other household improvements we would have otherwise not been able to do had it not been for the flood. So as I was pondering this in one of my more pensive moods, I came to the conclusion that eventhough in our lives we often experience a "flood" of sorts with all the curve balls life throws at us, when all is said and done and you come through it, often times you gained more than you lost and can look back at the inconveniences and mishaps with appreciation for the blessings in disguise.
I have been trying to focus on this thought since we are once again going through some turmoil with our job situations....like everyone else is, right? I know I should be thankful that I even have a job and am doing something I love (this is a point I have to remind myself of daily because truly I am blessed to have both) but sometimes it is unnerving to know that I am really unable to settle things down because I never know where we will have to move next. This may seem like a trivial point, and to most I am sure it is....I don't know how military families survive, but for some reason this time it really has me ruffled. Perhaps it's the fact that we just moved here a little less than 2 years ago, or that this is the third school I have been at in 7 years, or that the twins are getting ready to start Kindergarten next year and I have no idea where they are going to go, or possibly that I have no idea what's going to happen next....whatever the reason, it has me stressing. Which, for those who know me, doesn't happen that often. I am usually pretty easy going, and can adapt in a positive way to most situations. Maybe it's my age, or the fact that I had certain ideas in my head as to how this would all work, or perhaps it's the fact that in general, I am a planner who likes to have everything laid out in advance so I know what to expect....I don't handle the unexpected too well. Whatever the reason, I am just ruffled by the unknown.....
As I was contemplating the heart of the matter, I came to the conclusion that trust is not something that comes naturally to me....I don't know why, but it doesn't. It is generally very difficult for me to rely on other people or the unknown when it comes to me, my life, and what goes on....I didn't have a particularly traumatic childhood, rather a very happy one for the most part. We didn't move around a lot although, we did move when I was in 8th grade, so it begs the question...why is this so difficult for me? Why do I struggle with not being able to control the situation? After much pondering, I concluded often times, trials are allowed to happen or things are placed in our paths that are difficult to deal with and/or handle so that we will learn and grow. Life is not easy, but after every storm, there is a rainbow to serve as a reminder that the storm is over and this too shall pass.

Flood gates
So, It's been about a month since my last posting....not too bad considering I went for two years prior to then.
Where to begin....well, we're in the middle of football season, we've dealt with the typical illnesses that back to school brings, and have had some really close games though none have been wins. However, the latest incident to strike the Jenkins' household happened over the weekend. I'll try to paint a picture for you.....
It was Friday afternoon around 5pm. I had just finished feeding the children and had put them in the tub so that I could get them bathed and dressed for bed before the baby-sitter got there, and before I had to leave for the game. I had gone into the other room to get the children's PJ's when all of the sudden I heard some screaming and squealing coming from the bathroom followed by a "mommy come quick! water is coming out of the toilet." Those are never words you want to hear from your 4-o year olds. So, I ran into the bathroom to see both of my children peering out of the tub at the now lake of water that was collecting on the floor in their bathroom. Caroline had apparently gotten out to use the bathroom and when she flushed, well, the toilet overflowed. This is not an uncommon situation....I am sure everyone has had this happen before. What happened after that was definitely a sight to behold.
After a brief moment of panic, I quickly went into emergency mode, grabbed some towels and the plunger, then began to go to work. First, I placed the towels on the floor to soak up the water and stop it from crossing the threshold. Next, I took the plunger to the toilet and proceeded to get the water back down to the appropriate level...careful not to cause any of the contents of the toilet to spill out onto the floor. (I know you can read in between the lines, so I will spare you those details) While this is all happening, the twins are laughing hysterically and Brody is teasing Caroline about clogging up the toilet etc.......you can imagine that, I know. As I am working quickly, I keep hearing this sound coming from somewhere....it sort of sounded like the shower was on........
.......well, turns out, there was a shower going- and rain shower of sorts....and IT WAS COMING OUT OF MY CEILING DOWNSTAIRS......I stood there in total disbelief while watching the Niagara Falls that was coming out of my ceiling. The water from upstairs had somehow found its way downstairs via the vent where the airconditioning also comes out. Lucky for me, it was raining directly into the kitchen sink. So, I grabbed some more towels, my large dutch oven that I use to cook soup in, and proceeded to place it under the leak. After several pot-fulls of water it finally stopped. All of this happened in a matter of about 10 minutes.....I have never seen anything like it.
Well, needless to say, we now have inustrial size dryers placed all over our house in order to dry up the moisture in the celining etc.....it sounds like we are in an airplane....next to the wing.
As I was going to bed last night, I had to laugh and think.....life sure is interesting sometimes, isn't it? While this is something I wouldn't wish on anyone, I am at the least thankful that the roof/ceiling didn't cave in and it is something our homeowner's insurance will cover.
It's definitely been a trying start to the school year with illnesses, a struggling football team, and stressful, heavy work load at school. However, in these times, I am thankful I can laugh at the adversity.... I for one am thankful for the laughter....sometimes it really is the best medicine.

Kids and the things they say
So, we've started another school year and it has blown in with full force. Within the first few weeks, we have all been sick and each missed a day of work/school. However, I am hopeful now that we've gotten that out of the way the rest of the year will be uneventful in the sickness department. I simply do not have time to be sick!! We are getting ready to kick off our first game of the season this Friday night against our in-town rival, Mill Creek. Hoping for the big WIN!! I am still adjusting to being here in Gwinnett, but have decided to focus on the fact that I have been given an opportunity to earn a living working with kids. I do love my students no matter how frustrated I get with all of the things I cannot control at this time.
While home today with my son, I was able to enjoy some one-on-one time with my first born (if only by a minute). We watched some TV together, raced some hot-wheels, and played soldier with Caroline's Cinderella castle. As I watched with wonder, I realized how much attention he pays to detail especially with setting up his soldiers strategically around the castle, and then lining up his cars in order of size and type. Often the quiet twin, Brody is mistaken for being slower sometimes than his sister who is very vocal and outward with what all she knows and can do because she is so excited and passionate about things. (Admittedly, this is a trait that is not the best at times and is often misunderstood though she does come by it honestly and it can be used for good). However, he is in no way slower than his sister....he is just taking everything in and then carefully decides when and how to use what he knows. Have to say I am a pretty proud mama with respect to both of my children. They are simply amazing!! Love when they allow me little glimpses into their worlds and how they see things. I have learned so much from them.
Well, their dinner conversation is what has really prompted this blog....it was just too funny, and I had to share. Even if no one reads my blog because I am so horrible about updating it, maybe one person will and it will bring a smile to their face as it did mine.
While folding clothes as they were eating, I casually observed the conversation although careful not to reveal I am listening. (This is a skill I am honing for later use during the teenage years...I get lots of practice at school with my students and their conversations, but that's a whole different topic for another day.)
Brody and Caroline were discussing the fact that they love each other and how they are each other's best friend. Caroline was really missing the fact that Brody had not gone to school with her today. Brody reassured her that they were twins, so they would always be together as they always have been. I was so touched by their affection and genuine care for one another and pray that it always remains. Good to have someone in your corner, right? After a few minutes of brother/sister love, Brody told his sister that they would be getting married to each other when they were older because they were twins and had to stay together. They did not want to hear from me when I told them that brothers and sisters do not usually marry each other. (I'll leave off the Alabama, Kentucky, etc....comments....you know you thought them though.)
They then wanted to know why and who they would marry then, to which I told them that God made someone special for them and that when the time was right, he would send that person to them. They pondered this for a bit, and then Brody said this: "God will give them good directions so they don't get lost and can find us, right?" After supressing my laughter, I assured him that God gives perfect directions and that there would be no trouble. This seemed to please him and then Caroline decided that they could all be best friends and live together and/or near each other.
I thought it was so sweet....and then I thought some more about God giving directions....how often do we not follow them? So many times I thought I had the directions down pat and knew the way best only to have a road block in the way or end up at a dead end or driving in circles. So thankful for my son's comments because it has allowed me the opportunity to think about this-God knows best and scripts our lives in order that we may experience his best if we choose to follow him. We just have to be sure to follow his direction so as not to get lost along the way. I am also thankful for the fact that when we do lose our way and get going the wrong direction, He is there to provide roadside assistance to get us going back in the right direction. Didn't mean to turn this into a sermon, but it was just a thought I had while pondering what my son said earlier, so I thought I'd share.
Blessings this week to all....have a good one!!

Catching up again
So, I spent some time tonight looking through the blog, and I realized time really does go by fast!!! I can't believe the twins are going to be 5 years old soon; it seems like only yesterday that they were born. I am not even sure that there are still people who read this blog...especially since I do such a great job of keeping it updated (please note intentional sarcasm in the tone) but I thought I'd once again update in the event that there are those out there who want to be in the know with the Jenkins' family.
Well, as mentioned above, the twins are soon to be 5 year-olds in about 4 months give or take a week or two, and will be entering pre-K in the Fall. They have late birthday, so missed the cut off for Kindergarten by two months. Thank goodness for that....not sure I am ready to send them off to "big school" just yet. As far as Clint and I and our location, we are living in a house in Buford, GA and are both at Dacula High School in Dacula, GA where I teach and Clint teaches and coaches football. (Yes, we have moved several times since my last posting)
While I do enjoy working at the same place as Clint, and have met some really nice people, I do miss my friends and old job from last year....It was a great one. However, I am very, very thankful to be gainfully employed especially since times are tough for so many. It is nice to know I get to continue doing what I enjoy. Clint is very happy with his team and is looking forward to starting a new season.....in our house, it's football time again as the kids say. We had a great first year at Dacula last year with the team advancing to the 3rd round of the playoffs last year. It was a really neat experience; one that hopefully we'll repeat.
Summer has been good to us so far...I have enjoyed getting to catch up with some old friends, and hopefully will do a better job at staying in touch. It's hard when you move and then everyone has kids etc.....life just passes you by. The kids have really enjoyed the pool, and I have to say it's something I enjoy as well. We are getting ready for a last minute trip this weekend to Pigeon Forge with mom and dad, and then it's home for a week before we head out to the beach for the first two weeks in July. We are fortunate to be able to see family and friends during our time off and spend some quality time together.
I became an Aunt again this year.....my sister had a little girl, Lucy, who I am just crazy about. She is the cutest and I can't wait until I get to go and visit her again!
So, I know I say this every time, but I really am going to try and post more than once every 2 years.....I know I can do better than that. :) I'll post some updated pics next time....
